Production of Mitsubishi cars in the USA

The production of Mitsubishi Cars in the USA started with the formation of DSM (Diamond Star Motors), which was set up with Chrysler of USA. The new company was incorporated in 1985, with both Mitsubishi and Chrysler holding equal shares. The production of Mitsubishi cars in the USA started in 1989, with an annual capacity of 250000 units, in the manufacturing facility at Normal, Illinois. All Mitsubishi cars initially manufactured in the USA used a common platform, and were marketed under three different badges, the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Plymouth Lased and Eagle Talon. Later, Chrysler sold the major part of its holding to Mitsubishi in 1991, and finally sold the rest in the open market in 1993.Mitsubishi continued with the name Diamond Star Motors up to June 1995, after which it was renamed Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. Manufacturing Division. Mitsubishi enjoys a popular market share in the US auto market, and this justifies its positive growth trend.
