I remember those covers. They were suppose to protect the fabric but they looked awful and very uncomfortable. Hot in the summer and cold in the winter.

I had not thought of those in years but it sounds like something my 86 yr. old mother would do. I never would use them on my car seats!

That was a trip down memory lane. How nostalgic.

Oh, yeah! We lived in Oklahoma, and my Dad’s plastic seat covers melted, too. They stuck to our clothes. In 1950 or 1951 or thereabouts, he bought a new car. He also bought “RayCo seat covers” manufactured by a subsidiary of the Ray Oil Company (later merged with “Sun” to become “Sun-Ray Oil Company.”)

J.D. Ray originally was just a kid in my mother’s high school class in Chickasha, Okla., before roughnecking in the oil fields and later drilling for oil. He was poor– or at least not rich– and very un-studious, hence (like Sam Walton) was expected not to amount to much.

But he started poking holes in the ground with oil well drilling equipment when he was just out of high school, and got rich.

“I still remember the old “RayCo Seat Covers” commercial jingle:

You’ll ride with pride when you ride with RayCo

      Seat covers in your car!

You’ll ride with pride when you ride with RayCo,

They’re the best seat covers there are!

      RayCos fit the best,

      RayCos wear the best,

RayCos are the best by far!

You’ll ride with pride when you ride with RayCo

      Seat covers in your car!”

[One of the better commercial jingles, and among the worst seat covers, that I ever have had the experience of enduring.]

We hated driving in his car, in the summer. I must have torn off miles of leg skin

Sure do and after a while they would yellow. On a hot day they were terrible because most cars had no a/c. They also came on the furniture we but old sheets over them to keep the plastic clean, so 50′s, early 60′s. We still have that furniture and it looks good. My grandmother’s “ART DECO” bedroom set is still holding up too.

My dad had them on this beautiful brand new 1966 Pontiac he bought. I loved that car, but hating sitting on those seats when I was wearing shorts.

in 1960 s my aunt had an Impala w/ those clear plastic covers on…..i nevr understood why till i had kids.

Boy do I ever remember. My uncle owned a full service station right after WW2. I loved hanging out there. He had the penny peanut machines and icy cold coke in the small bottles. I was about 4 in 57 and he aquired the most beautiful candy apple red 1953 buick, I cant remember the make but ot was huge and had shinny crome all over it. The car also had strips of white. The interior was mosly white leather with red strips. They covered it in the plastic seat covers. One day he wanted to take me out for lunch. I went tearing over and jumped right in the car. Hot summer day, no air. I let out a yelp that was probably heard downtown. Uncle Joe fixed it up with some towels for me to set on. What a great man with a great car. Thanks for the memory.

I knew people who had them on everything; cars, couches, lampshades, plastic runners on the carpeting, on the table. That stuff had a way of making everything unbearably uncomfortable. Even in the winter you could sweat in back.
